Teaching and Tutoring Experience

Tom brings over a decade of high-level mathematics teaching experience. Having completed both an integrated Master’s (MMath) and a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Nottingham, he spent years as an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, leading curriculum design and student experience. He now serves as the Mathematics and Statistics Support Lead at the University of Leicester, holding a formal Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE).

Tom’s extensive career in university-level lecturing gives his A Level tuition a distinct edge. Rather than simply teaching students how to pass an exam through rote memorisation, Tom focuses on developing authentic mathematical intuition, structural understanding, and problem-solving confidence. He regularly works with students across the entire attainment spectrum—from those needing clear, accessible breakdowns to secure target grades, to high achievers aiming for top grades.

Higher Education Insight

With over 10 years spent teaching first-year undergraduate mathematics, Tom knows precisely where the gaps in A Level knowledge typically lie and what skills students need to thrive at the next level. His research and practical work in mathematics education specifically focus on bridging the transition from school/college to university.

Tom's university-level teaching experience means he is exceptionally well-placed to mentor ambitious STEM applicants, guiding them through challenging problem-solving techniques and breaking down complex topics in multiple, intuitive ways.
